Japanese Poetry - course offer in the summer semester

Thursday 12 February 2026, 16:59

Dear students,

I’m forwarding an invitation to a master’s seminar on Japanese poetry in English translation, which might be of interest to some of you. No Japanese language knowledge is required, so anyone curious about literature, culture, or translation is welcome to join.

In this seminar, students will explore English translations of major forms of Japanese poetry, including waka, renga, haikai, senryū, and tanka. Beyond examining poetic forms, the course also looks at the social roles poetry played in Japan’s past. Participants will even get to try out traditional poetic games, using the poems studied in class.

Lecturer: Kurtis Hanlon, PhD

Time: Wednesdays, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m.

Course Code in STAG: DAS/JPOE

Number of credits: 6 ECTS

Place: tř. Svobody 26, room 2.39
