KAREL ČAPKA

Student of the 4th year of PhD Study Programme: Lingvistika a Digital Humanities

Taru and Bologna: what can they have in common?

1. Short-term mobility to Alma Mater Studiorum - Universita di Bologna, Italy, Erasmus programme, WS 2022/2023

2. Short-term mobility to University of Tartu, Estonia, Erasmus programme, SS 2022/2023

In both cases, the student took the opportunity to go on a short-term stay, which is a new feature of the Erasmus programme from 2021. Short-term student trips are intended for PhD students and are attractive because of the length of the mobility, where the student does not have to spend the whole semester abroad. The minimum duration for this type of mobility is 5 days, the maximum is 30 days.

What does the author of the exhibition, Karel Čapka, add to this?

„Traveling abroad was a must for me. A necessary condition to continue my studies. However, I had no idea what administrative problems, nerves, stress and uncertainty this process entails.

I had the opportunity to travel twice, each time to different destinations, Italy and Estonia. Unfortunately, the scenario was always the same, administrative problems right from the start and uncertainty until the last minute whether I could leave or not. However, the result for the "torture" I experienced was unforgettable experiences that I tried in vain to capture in the pictures you are looking at right now. No photograph can convey the atmosphere of the moment and the aura of which Walter Benjamin speaks is lost.

Even though it seems that I have gone to Golgotha in my attempts to travel, I would dive into the murky bureaucratic waters again to gain experience and take new pictures abroad.
